A Girl Scout’s Silver Award Produces Gold for SRMC Patients
Though it is never easy to be a patient in a hospital, the experience as a pediatric inpatient at Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center just became much more enjoyable thanks to the idea of a local student and the generosity of a community.
For her Girl Scout Silver Award, Caitlin Hacker chose to solicit the donation of new books and new games for use by pediatric patients in the area’s newest hospital. The eighth grade student at Thornburg Middle School orchestrated the entire campaign, developed flyers and promotional materials and even gave her first public speeches for the cause. Her dedication and enthusiasm led to the donation of more than 200 games and books, which will be used to entertain younger inpatients at the hospital. “I am extremely proud to accept these items on behalf of Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center and the patients for who it will improve their visit,” said Rob Toonkel, Senior Leader for Guest Services. “I applaud Caitlin for her efforts in planning and carrying out this project and thank her for selecting the patients of our hospital as the beneficiary of her mission. I also want to extend a thank you to the community for their generosity, and for providing such a warm welcome in our first year of operation.”
In addition to her schoolwork, Girl Scouts and various extra-curricular activities, Caitlin is also part of the SRMC volunteer program, where she gives her time on Wednesday nights.

Congratulations, Caitlin! What a terrific project.
I am so proud of you and what you accomplished!!!
